This is the companion app for Labyrinth, the artwork I am presenting as part of the graduate exhibition Sixfivefivesix. This application forms part of my research, which aims to investigate how Augmented Reality technology can be used by practitioners of comics to create innovative and immersive narrative experiences. The combination of comics and AR technology has a very recent history. However, the few examples of augmented comics created to date still treat comics and AR as rival media: AR is treated as ‘bonus content’, being used to deliver creator commentaries, video clips, and other secondary content.
My work presents an approach to storytelling which makes full use of both media by treating augmented reality as another canvas upon which comics can be presented. Thus, the project allows comic panels to expand into three-dimensional space, creating scenes frozen in time, and allows panels to link to parallel narratives unfolding alongside the main storyline, leading the reader forwards and backwards in time.
